Go cordless with a battery-powered solution

Categories: Best Practices

The constantly evolving battery technology is driving a growing number of battery-powered applications in different industries. Moreover, battery-powered machines are becoming smaller, lighter and have a longer shelf life, which makes them far easier and more cost-effective to use.

The commercial cleaning industry is seeing the influx of battery-powered solutions too. At Nilfisk, we have a range of battery-powered solutions that can help you optimize productivity and save costs.

Battery vacuum cleaners have several advantages over plugged-in versions. One is that operators do not have to search for power outlets or wind and unwind cables. This gives them greater freedom and saves time.

Another is a safe cleaning environment for both visitors and operators. The absence of cords and cables eliminate the risk of trips and falls. And battery-driven cleaning solutions also offer operators more flexibility, allowing them to clean hard-to-reach spaces and to clean better. This flexibility helps improve productivity.

Safety, flexibility and durability with the Nilfisk Battery Management System
All our battery vacuum cleaners use lithium ion batteries that offer sustained high performance over a long lifetime. These batteries offer:

  • a run time of up to 60 minutes
  • a best-in-class charge time of only 40 minutes
  • more than 1000 full charging cycles
What sets our battery vacuum cleaners apart from others is the intelligent battery management system (BMS) integrated in the battery pack. “Our main objective was to build a flexible, cost-effective and safe system”, says Jan Thorsoe, Principal R&D Engineer at Nilfisk.

“In traditional battery managements systems, both the battery pack and charger are intelligent. We developed a battery pack with enough intelligence to control the charger as well. With the BMS controlling the charger, the same charger can be used with different battery packs. This not only delivers greater flexibility; it also reduces costs.”

“Safety and longevity have been key focus areas for us too. Our BMS monitors the cells in the batteries, constantly measuring the voltage, charge current, discharge current and temperature. This protects the cells from malfunctioning. Our BMS balances the cells, compensating the difference in the cells’ aging levels over time. This optimizes the battery pack, ensuring an extended cycle life and ultimately longer battery life,” explains Jan.

When to choose a battery-powered vacuum cleaner?
The cleaning scenarios listed below can help determine when to choose a battery-driven vacuum cleaner over a plugged-in version

  • vacuuming in very congested areas
  • vacuuming stairways
  • vacuuming short period of time and/or high frequency
  • vacuuming in areas with no or limited access to power-source
If a battery-powered vacuum is the best choice for your application, you should consider whether to purchase a back-pack or canister model. Learn more in this article
